PO-PatchStudio Docs

PO-PatchStudio is a free app for the Teenage Engineering Pocket Operator PO-32 Tonic. Design drum sounds and write patterns on a bigger screen, then send them to the PO-32 over its own acoustic transfer, or record the PO-32’s data dump back as a backup. It runs on macOS, Windows, Linux, iPhone, iPad and Android.

It’s built on the open-source libpo32 engine by Eric Lewis, which handles the transfers and the synth you hear in the app.

  • Design sounds with all 21 parameters of the PO-32’s drum synth, on both the A and B side of each voice. See The Studio.
  • Write patterns on a faceplate that works like the hardware, including write mode, then chain them together and bounce them to a WAV.
  • Send to the PO-32: kits, single sounds and patterns. See Sending to the PO-32.
  • Back up the PO-32 by recording its data dump. See Backup and Restore.
  • Import Microtonic patches (.mtdrum and .mtpreset), older formats included. See Microtonic Import and Export.
  • Keep a library of kits, voices, patterns and backups. See The Library.
  • Play it on your phone, with a fullscreen faceplate and a swipe-up drawer. See On Your Phone.

Today PO-PatchStudio supports the PO-32 Tonic. Also sends drum sounds to the PO-35 Speak’s built-in Tonic channel. Fuller support for the PO-33 K.O! and PO-35 Speak (their samples, speech sounds and backups) is on the roadmap, not promised. See the FAQ for the honest state of play.

  1. Download and install for your platform.
  2. Find your way around the Studio.
  3. Send a sound to your PO-32.

The Studio doesn’t keep your work between launches, so save to the Library as you go.

The app plays sounds with the libpo32 synth, so they’re close to the hardware but not identical. Anything you send plays through the PO-32’s own engine and sounds right on the device.

PO-PatchStudio is free, with no licence, trial or in-app purchase. It’s developed independently for interoperability and isn’t affiliated with or endorsed by Teenage Engineering AB or Sonic Charge / NuEdge Development AB.
