How to Manage Samples on Your EP-1320 Medieval

The EP-1320 Medieval comes with a big factory library, and your own samples live in the slots after it. Finding a free slot, loading a sound and checking what’s where is slow on the front panel, one slot number at a time. On your computer you can see the whole library at once.

Here’s how to do it with EP-PatchStudio’s File Manager.

The File Manager and the Batch Processor are part of Pro. The 14-day trial includes them.

The EP-1320 numbers its samples from 1 to 999, and the File Manager splits them into the same banks as TE’s own Sample Tool. Each bank is a tab:

  • Slots 1 to 220 hold the factory library, in five banks: PERX, PHRASI, INSTRUM, SOLUS and SONUM. They’re read-only. The device can’t delete or overwrite them, so the File Manager marks these tabs with a lock.
  • Slots 221 to 999 are yours, in five banks from APERTO 1 to APERTO 5. This is where your own samples go.

Hover over a tab to see its slot range and how many slots in it are used.

  1. Plug the EP-1320 into your computer with a USB-C data cable. Charge-only cables won’t work.
  2. Open EP-PatchStudio and go to the File Manager.

The File Manager reads every sample from the device, so what you see is what’s on the EP-1320. Pick a tab to see that bank, or search by name. Turn on Auto-preview and selecting a sample plays it, so you can move through a bank with the arrow keys and listen as you go.

If the File Manager stays empty, check the cable carries data and the device is on. EP Device Not Showing Up Over USB? has more fixes.

  1. Open one of the APERTO tabs.
  2. Drag your WAV, AIFF or MP3 files from your computer onto a slot. You can drop a whole folder too.

EP-PatchStudio converts each file to a format the EP-1320 accepts as it uploads. If you drop several files, they go into that slot and the ones after it, in order, and an upload replaces anything already in those slots. Drop onto an empty slot with enough free slots after it.

You can’t upload into the factory banks. If you try, the File Manager stops and asks you to pick a slot from 221 up.

To get a folder ready first, such as trimming silence or normalising the level, run it through the Batch Processor before you upload.

The factory sounds can’t be changed, but you can copy one. Right-click a factory sample and choose Duplicate: the copy goes into the next free slot in your APERTO banks, where it’s yours to rename, edit or replace.

Right-click a sample and choose Download to save it as a WAV. Select several and use Download in the toolbar to save them all to your Downloads folder, or Export ZIP to put them in one file. It’s the way to keep a sound you might want again, or to take a recording on the EP-1320 into your DAW.

Select a sample in your own banks and choose Delete. EP-PatchStudio keeps a copy in the Recycle Bin, so you can bring back a sample you deleted by mistake. With Protect used on, the File Manager skips samples that one of your projects uses.

Factory samples can’t be deleted. If you select some by mistake, the File Manager skips them and says so.

The Recycle Bin is a short-term safety net, not a backup. Before a gig or a firmware update, take a full device backup as well.

EP-PatchStudio is free to download. The File Manager is part of Pro, and the 14-day trial includes it, so you can manage your EP-1320 from your computer instead of the front panel.
