Building professional tools for Teenage Engineering hardware
It started with an OP-1. Then an OP-XY. Then an EP-133, and an EP-40 Riddim. Each time, the same story: incredible hardware, but the software side felt like an afterthought.
Want to manage your patches? Open a browser, hope you're online, and pray the web app doesn't crash. Need to create multisamples? Prepare to juggle three different apps and a lot of patience. Want to back up your device? Set aside an hour.
I spent more time fighting with file management than making music. And as someone who's been building software for nearly 20 years, I knew there had to be a better way.
So I built it. First for myself, then for other TE owners who were just as frustrated.
I'm a software engineer with nearly 20 years of experience in IT and development. By day, I build enterprise software. By night (and weekends), I make music and build tools that scratch my own itch.
SquareWave Studio started as a hobby project. I needed something that would let me manage patches on my OP-XY without the hassle of browser-based tools. That became OP-PatchStudio.
Then I got an EP-40 Riddim and faced the same problems. So I built EP-PatchStudio to create multisamples quickly, auto-sample my hardware synths, and manage my EP devices without the frustration.
After months of development and daily use on my own gear, I realised other TE owners might find these tools useful too. That's what SquareWave Studio is: professional tools for Teenage Engineering hardware, built by someone who actually uses this stuff.
Patch and multisample creation for OP-XY. Browse, organise, and backup your patches with drag and drop simplicity.
Multisampler creation for EP-40 Riddim. Full file management for EP devices with auto-sampling and offline support.
More tools for TE hardware. Built by someone who uses this gear daily.
Yes, I use AI tools to help with development. Who doesn't these days? But this isn't someone typing "make me an app" into ChatGPT and shipping whatever comes out.
These are properly engineered applications. Every feature has been tested on real hardware. The Auto-Sampler in EP-PatchStudio works because I've spent countless hours refining the MIDI timing, audio detection and zone mapping algorithms. The file managers are fast because I've optimised how the software interfaces with the hardware.
I use these apps every single day on my own gear. If something's broken, I'm the first to notice - and the first to fix it.
Both OP-PatchStudio and EP-PatchStudio are actively developed. I have a roadmap of features based on my own needs and feedback from users. If you own Teenage Engineering gear and wish there was better software for it, there's a good chance I'm already working on it.
If you have feature requests or find bugs, email me at joe@squarewave.studio. I read every message and will try to respond within 24 hours.
